A drain that used to work and doesn’t anymore is one of our most common calls. The good news: failed drains almost always fail for a short list of reasons, and most are fixable without starting over.
When we dig up a drain that quit, it’s nearly always one of these:
We start at the outlet and work back, because a buried or blocked discharge is the easiest thing to miss and the easiest to fix. From there we check slope, look for crushed sections, and figure out whether the line silted up from missing fabric. Sometimes the repair is clearing and re-daylighting the outlet; sometimes it’s replacing a crushed run; sometimes the original was built without fabric or fall and the honest answer is rebuilding that section correctly so you’re not back here next year.
Our goal on a repair is the same as on a new install: build it so it keeps working. That means fabric in clay soils, real slope, pipe that won’t crush, and an outlet that stays clear. We’ll tell you plainly whether your drain is worth repairing or whether you’ll save money rebuilding the bad section right.
Not every failed drain is worth saving, and we’ll give you the honest call. If the line was built correctly and simply clogged at the outlet or filled with debris, a clear-out and re-daylighting gets it working again cheaply. If a single run of pipe was crushed, we replace that section. But when we open a drain and find it was built without filter fabric in our clay soils, or with no real slope, or with thin corrugated pipe run shallow, patching it just buys a season — the same failure comes back. In those cases the honest, cheaper-over-time answer is to rebuild that stretch to a standard that lasts: fabric, washed stone, proper fall, and pipe that won’t crush.
