When water sits on top of the ground — sheeting across the lawn, pooling in a low spot, turning one corner of the yard into standing mud — the fix is a surface drainage system sized to how the water actually moves across your property.
A French drain handles water trapped in saturated soil. Surface drainage handles the water you can see running and pooling on top. In Tyler, where a sandy topsoil sits on slow clay, you often get both at once: rain that can’t soak in fast enough runs to the low point and stands there. Before we recommend anything we walk the property and, where it matters, shoot grades so we’re designing to real elevations instead of guesswork. The goal is to catch water where it collects and give it a continuous downhill path to somewhere it can safely leave. A catch basin with nowhere to drain is just a bucket; the design is in the discharge as much as the collection.
Water that ponds next to the house is the exact condition building-science guidance warns against. Keeping the grade sloping away from the foundation — about 0.5 inch per foot over the first 10 feet over the first several feet — is the baseline, and surface drainage is how we achieve it when the existing grade fights you. Moving that water off keeps the soil moisture around your slab or crawl space more even.
These two tools solve different shapes of the same problem. A catch basin is a box set into a low point — the spot where water naturally collects — with a grate on top and a pipe out the side; it drops standing water into your buried line. A channel drain (sometimes called a trench drain) is a long, narrow grated channel you set across a path of moving water — the bottom of a driveway, the edge of a patio, a walkway between the house and garage — to intercept it in a line before it reaches somewhere it shouldn’t. As a rule, catch basins handle water that pools; channel drains handle water that runs. Most yards that need surface drainage need some of each, tied into the same discharge.
Surface drains have one enemy: debris. Leaves, grass clippings, and mulch wash toward the grate and, left alone, build up until the basin backs up in the next storm. The fix is simple — keep the grates clear, especially in fall, and flush the line through the clean-outs we install.
